Dáil Hears Quin Cancer Sufferer “Afraid For Her Life” Over €150,000 Treatment Cost
The Dáil has heard a call for the State to open up access to a state of the art treatment that would assist some cancer patients, including a Quin woman.
Maria Meade, who has undergone surgery as part of her treatment, is now cancer free but has been advised to undergo an immunotherapy treatment, pembrolizumab.
The drug has been lauded by Vicky Phelan, who has campaigned for it to be made available to cancer patients.
However, Maria’s stage of cancer means that it is not available to her publicly, or through her health insurance, and a year’s treatment would cost €150,000.
Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe told TDs that Maria is afraid for her life.
