Schoolgirl’s sweet gesture after watching classmate battle cancer
A 10-year-old girl who has grown her amazing, long curly hair for years is having it cut after a school friend underwent cancer treatment.
Savannah Lee, a pupil at St Margaret Mary’s junior school in Dovecot is planning to have her locks chopped and made into a wig for young cancer sufferers who have lost their hair through chemotherapy.
Her mum, Leanne, 34, said the whole family are “incredibly proud” of Savannah’s selfless gesture and fundraising for children’s charity Zoe’s Place.

Leanne said: “She’s been wanting her hair cut for years and I’ve been telling her no.
“It goes right down her back to the top of her bum.
“But there was a kid that went to her school who lost all her hair to chemotherapy.
“So we started talking about children who have no hair because of cancer and she said she’d love to donate her hair for the kids who have lost theirs.”
Leanne agreed that her daughter can donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust who provide free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.
The trust, who also fund life-saving research into childhood cancers, started in 2006 and have supplied over 8000 wigs to children and young people in that time.
The proud mum also set up a Just Giving page to raise money for Zoe’s Place and smashed her £500 target in less than 24 hours.

Leanne said her daughter was “overwhelmed” by the donations and that she “couldn’t be prouder”.
Adding: “She’s lost people as well, a very close friend of ours, who had breast cancer.
“She had to go through chemotherapy and wore a wig herself.”
A message written on Savannah’s Just Giving page reads: “I (Savannah) am going to have all my curls chopped off and sent to the Little Princess Trust, to help make wigs for children and young people with hair loss.
“All the money will go to Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice who provide palliative, end-of-life treatment care and respite care for babies.”
Leanne said Savannah’s brothers AJ and Frankie, sister Sienna and Leanne’s cousin Kayleigh who contacted the ECHO are all incredibly proud of what she is doing.
Savannah will be getting her hair chopped on November 20 and donations can continue to be made to the Just Giving page until then.
