‘Save our Stan’: Family of two-year-old fight for cancer treatment in Singapore
The family of a two-year-old boy who has cancer say they are immensely grateful that more than £150,000 has been raised to send him abroad for a potentially life-saving treatment.
They were told this month that their son Stanley’s cancer -T cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia – had returned for a third time and there was nothing that could be done.
His mum, Georgia Brecken, said: “It’s been awful. Absolutely devastating. I think we were just so shocked, because everything seemed to be going so well.
“We thought we’d got away with it, and he would be totally fine. It came out of the blue.”
Now doctors have recommended a medical trial taking place in Singapore, more than 6,000 miles away. They would have to move there for a year and the treatment alone would cost half a million pounds.
Georgia said: “If Stanley had B-cell Leukaemia, there is treatment in the UK for it. But unfortunately for T-Cell Leukaemia, there isn’t the treatment available here.
“We could keep him well here [in the UK], but ultimately he will die from his disease. So, our only option is to try and get this money and try and get us over to Singapore and hopefully save his life.”
Stanley has been treated in the Great North Children’s Hospital based at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
In just seven days, more than £150,000 has been donated to a fundraising page – something the family are immensely grateful for.
The Save our Stan appeal has also attracted celebrity attention.
One Carlisle United fan is donating a very special piece of football memorabilia.
David Mitchell was a ballboy in May 1999 when Jimmy Glass scored his famous goal saving the club from relegation from the Football League. He’s now putting the signed gloves up for auction.
David said: “I was just sat yesterday speaking to my dad, thinking about ways we could help. This was one way.
“If we can raise a little bit of money, even if it’s just £500 or £1,000, it will go in the fund and help Stan.”
This is the third time Stanley has had to battle this cancer. He’s amazed doctors by overcoming it before, he just needs a bit of help try and do it again.
