COVID-19 fails to dampen cancer fundraiser
Despite the impact of COVID-19 on the country, Fiji’s longest running and biggest cancer fundraising event was launched yesterday in Suva.
Bushells Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea was officially launched by Motibhai Group marketing manager Abraham Gomes and Fiji Cancer Society CEO Belinda Chan.
Mr Gomes said the initiative had helped save thousands of lives and facilitated much-needed patient care support for cancer survivors and patients undergoing treatment.
“These are difficult times because of COVID-19 and its global impact on businesses and families across every sector but we must not forget that the pandemic will come and go but unfortunately, cancer as a disease remains in our communities, and it is therefore essential to carry on with the campaign to enable the society to raise the necessary funds to operate smoothly,” he said.
“I strongly request all organisations which have been hosting a tea event to raise funds in previous years not to shy away this year but, rather, work around the situation to facilitate such a noble cause.”
He said the Fiji Cancer Society had rolled out virtual tea party packages for organisations interested in hosting their morning tea events on a smaller scale.
Echoing similar sentiments, Ms Chan said what drove the society was the simple vision of a nation free from cancer.
She said the society recognised the magnitude of cancer in Fiji as the third leading cause of death. She also thanked the management of the Motibhai Group for the 14-year partnership.
